What the full title check covers
- Title brands: salvage, flood, junk, rebuilt and the others states use.
- Odometer readings each time the title changed hands, so a rollback stands out.
- Insurance total losses, and reports from junk and salvage yards.
- The last state that titled the car, and when.
It comes from NMVTIS, the national title database that states, insurers and salvage yards report to. We get it through an approved provider.
Title check or full history report?
We check title records. CARFAX adds service and accident records from shops. Dealer selling it? Ask them for the CARFAX, it's often free. Buying from a private seller? Check the title first.
NMVTIS does not have every car, and some states report late. A clean report is not a clean car. Have a mechanic look at it before you pay.
Questions
What is a salvage title?
An insurance company decided the car cost more to fix than it was worth, often after a crash, flood or theft. A salvage car can be rebuilt and sold again, but it is usually worth much less and can be hard to insure or finance.
What is NMVTIS?
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. It collects title records from state motor vehicle agencies, insurers, and junk and salvage yards. It is run for the U.S. Department of Justice, and only approved providers can sell its reports. We get yours through one of them.
How fast is it?
Within minutes.
What if there are no records?
The report says so. A clean report is a good sign, not a promise. Have a mechanic look at the car.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If the title database has no record of the VIN at all, or we can't send your report, we refund the $9.99.
Do you keep my VIN?
The free check runs on your phone and asks NHTSA, the U.S. safety agency, directly. We don't store the VIN or send it to our visit counts. If you text us, the VIN is in your message so we can run the check.
